Cathedral
by M. Heath Johnson
It's always been a parish, unassuming
Nearly invisible to the naked eye
Sheltering abundant life at its core
Standing without a steeple like a fortress,
Tiny windows allowing faint streams of light
It held royalty 200 years ago, an era long
Gone but now its members boast of relics
Reflecting extravagance but not opulence.
Understating what lies within, doors locked
Like a stranger at odds with its heritage
Avoiding some dreadful malaise like
Wanderers, screeching cars, urban dialogue
Disrupting peace and tranquility
Signaling change.
Though not a cathedral it demands respect
If only for having the courage to stand
Against the elements, separated
By time and left in a state of
Mourning days gone by.
